Cane Hill lies in a narrow green valley in the hills of Washington County, old stone and brick buildings strung along the road and pasture climbing away on both sides. Banda lawn care keeps the yards there cut level, trimmed close along the walls and the steps, and edged where lawn gives way to gravel. Mornings come into the valley cool well past the start of summer, and the light stays soft on the ridges until the sun clears them. In autumn the hardwood slopes above town let go all at once, and the last cuts of the year get mixed in with leaf clearing. A tended yard in a village that old looks less like upkeep than like respect.
