West of Sylacauga the ground drops toward the Coosa, and in late May the creek bottoms and river bends put on more growth in a week than seems reasonable. Riverside Trail Services keeps yards and open ground from getting away from people out there — mowing on schedule, cutting back the tall growth along fence lines and property edges, trimming around trunks, posts and culverts. The drive is edged back to its own outline and the walks blown off before the crew moves on. On the larger lots it is as much about keeping the woods where they belong as it is about the lawn itself. Either way the finish is the same: a place that plainly looks looked after.
