Earth Cuts

About Earth Cuts

Two o'clock in July, and Sylacauga sits under a heat you can lean on — the creamery humming at the edge of town, pavement shimmering out toward Marble Valley, nobody outside who does not have to be. Earth Cuts is outside. Mowing, edging, string trimming, weed control, fertilizing and cleanups get done in that heat because grass does not take August off. Water, a shade break, back to it — and by evening a whole street of yards reads even and cared for. The reward comes later, when the sun drops behind the pines and the block smells like nothing but cut grass.
