Out past the subdivisions, Smiths Station opens into wide lots and hay-field edges where a yard runs to the tree line and keeps going. Farris Outdoors works that kind of ground — the acre-and-a-half places along the Lee County roads where mowing is a morning's job and the ditch banks need cutting too. Late August, grass grows in the humidity almost faster than it can be cut, so the rotation stays tight and the blades stay sharp. Trimming out fence rows, knocking back overgrowth at the property line, clearing the limbs a storm left in the yard. Come November, when the hickories let go, the same trucks come back for the leaves.
