Custer's Lawn Care

About Custer's Lawn Care

Fog sits low over the Pea River bottoms most mornings in Elba, and by the time it lifts off the levee the mowers are already running. Custer's Lawn Care keeps yards on both sides of the floodwall — mowing, edging, string trimming, and blowing the clippings off walks before the heat comes up. In a town that has learned to read the river's mood, there is something steadying about a lawn cut in clean straight lines. Summer here is long and green and asks to be answered weekly; fall drops pecan leaves over everything at once, and those get gathered too. The work is simple to describe and hard to do well: an edge that holds, a bed that stays clean, a yard that looks cared for from the street.
