Spring Green

About Spring Green

Every March Birmingham goes yellow for a couple of weeks — pollen on the windshields, dogwoods opening white along the streets of Vestavia Hills — and then the grass wakes up all at once. Spring Green meets that surge with steady lawn care: mowing, edging, trimming, feeding the turf and keeping weeds from finding a foothold while everything is growing at speed. Lawns on the ridge sit on thin soil over rock and reward attention paid early rather than late. There is a stretch in May when a well-kept yard up there is about as green as green gets in this state. Holding that through the long heat of August is the real work, and it is worth every week of it.
