Wayne's Lawn Service #1

About Wayne's Lawn Service #1

North of town, where Highway 14 runs out toward Notasulga, the fields open up and the November light goes long and low across the stubble. Wayne's Lawn Service #1 keeps the grass cut in Auburn and the places just outside it — weekly mowing, edging, trimming around fences and mailboxes, leaf removal, seasonal cleanups. Autumn is quieter work, mostly raking and hauling, and there is a plain pleasure in a yard stripped clean ahead of the first real cold. Over by the ballfields at Duck Samford the leaves drift into the corners of the lot, and somebody has to move them. Come March it all begins again, and the mower is ready.
