The streets behind downtown Seward climb quickly toward the mountains, and by late afternoon in winter the sun has already dropped behind the ridge above town, leaving those upper blocks in shadow while the harbor below still holds a little light. SMG Landscapes clears driveways and walkways on that upper grade, where snow that falls wet in town often falls drier and deeper a few hundred feet higher. Steps and front walks get shoveled down to bare concrete and sanded against the ice that forms once the block drops into afternoon shadow. Parking areas for the homes closest to the Exit Glacier road get scraped clean so cars can still reach the highway out of town. It's a short window of daylight to work in, and the crew uses it well, clearing the grade before dark closes back over the valley.
