Resurrection Bay holds its own weather, and a system that dumps snow on the harbor in Seward can leave the head of the bay barely dusted an hour later, which means the plow routes along the waterfront change by the storm rather than by the calendar. North Gulf Coast Plowing works the streets closest to the small boat harbor, clearing the lots and access roads where crews load gear onto boats before first light, and pushing drifts back from the docks before lines and gear get buried under them. Driveways up toward the base of Mount Marathon get cleared on a steeper grade, where snow banks against the mountain's lower slope faster than it does on the flats near the water. Walkways along the harbor front get sanded so the footing holds for anyone hauling totes and coolers down to a slip. The bay itself stays open through most of it, dark water against the white shoreline.
