Some storms reach Seldovia after dark, sliding in off the water while the harbor lights blur and the masts tick in the wind. Winter Watch earns its name in those hours, bringing snow removal to driveways and walkways so the town wakes to open ground. Up the hill, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church stands with its onion dome capped in white, a landmark easy to pick out from the water below. There is a quiet pride in laying the first tracks on a fresh morning and leaving behind nothing but cleared ground and neatly stacked snow. Before the coffee is poured, the way down to the harbor is open.
