Bodenburg Butte rises up out of the flat farmland east of Palmer like something dropped there on purpose, and the properties tucked around its base look out at Pioneer Peak on one side and the Butte itself on the other, with the Knik River running cold and braided somewhere off through the fields. Valley Excavation LLC plows the driveways and farm access roads out here through a winter that follows the same valley that grows the state fair's famous oversized vegetables all summer, the long daylight of June giving way to some of the shortest, darkest days in the region by December. Farm lots tend to have more than one thing that needs clearing — a house driveway, a barn approach, sometimes a stretch of fence line road out to a back field — so routes here run longer per stop than a typical subdivision. Wind off the Knik River valley can load one side of a driveway with drift while leaving the other bare, so the plow work follows the wind pattern as much as the lot lines. It's agricultural country doing its winter work, the Butte standing watch over all of it from the middle of the valley.
