South of downtown Palmer, the land flattens into the wide fields that once grew the giant cabbages the Alaska State Fair still weighs every September, and it's across that open farmland that winter arrives first, in low grey cloud spilling down off the Butte. Alaska.Land works those exposed properties and the fairground's neighboring streets, where wind off the valley floor piles drifts against fence lines faster than in the sheltered blocks closer to town. Driveways get pushed clear down to gravel, parking areas get scraped and sanded, and walkways along the flat farm lots get shoveled before the wind has a chance to refill them. There's a particular satisfaction in a straight plowed line across land this open, with the Butte standing alone against the sky at the far edge of the field. That line holds until the next storm arrives, and then the trucks go back out and cut it again.
