Rising Lawn

About Rising Lawn

Breakup ends, the ground dries, and Knik turns green in a hurry. Rising Lawn works that surge — the weeks in late spring when the sun barely sets and the grass grows through the middle of the night. First comes the cleanup: winter gravel raked off the edges, dead thatch pulled out, the yard opened back up to the light. Then the routine settles in, week after week, mowing and trimming down the gravel drives that run toward the spruce and the lakes west of town. A straight cut on a wide Mat-Su lot, held all summer, is its own kind of pleasure — you can see where the work stopped and the wild country begins. Short season, long days, and a lawn that keeps its shape from thaw to the first frost.
