Up the Knik River from town, the valley opens toward the ice field that feeds it, and on a clear winter day the Knik Glacier itself is visible from higher ground, a pale wall at the head of a river that's frozen solid by then from bank to bank. CVM Alaska works the driveways and pull-outs along that river corridor, land that moose use as much as people do, tracks crossing a freshly plowed drive some mornings before the truck is even back to the shop. Snow piles thick and quiet along the river bottoms here, insulated by the cottonwood and willow that line the banks, while open fields nearby scour down to bare, wind-packed ground. Getting a truck or a trailer out to the river in winter means keeping the access roads honest, since a soft spot hidden under snow can swallow a tire in a way summer ground never would. There's a particular kind of quiet up this valley, glacier-fed and moose-crossed, and keeping a road open through it feels like a fair trade for the view.
