Late June fills the valley along the Knik with cottonwood fluff, white tufts drifting across the yards like a summer snowfall that never quite lands. Evergreen lawns works through those soft afternoons, mowing and edging lawns built on the fine gray silt the glacier-fed river has been laying down for ages. That ground can grow a handsome lawn when it is tended, and the work is about keeping grass thick, even and green through the brief, generous summer. After a passing shower the cut grass smells sweet and the spruce at the yard's edge drip silver. Green that lasts is the whole idea, carried as far into the season as the north allows.
