Rufous hummingbirds come back to Ketchikan in April, well ahead of any real warmth, showing up at feeders while the salmonberry is still only thinking about blooming. Hummingbird Services opens the mowing season right about then, on the yards along Carlanna Lake Road and up toward the Rainbird ridge, once the ground finally firms after the long wet stretch. First cuts of the year are the sweetest ones: the shaggy winter growth off, edges recut, a yard suddenly remembering what shape it is. From there it settles into a steady rhythm of mowing, trimming, edging and cleanups straight through the long light. Spring in Southeast arrives slowly, and a mown lawn is one of the first proofs it arrived at all.
