At the mouth of the Kenai River, where the water meets Cook Inlet under the bluff in Old Town, summer's dip-net crowds give way to a stillness that Snow Pressure LLC works through all winter. The bluff holds onto wind coming off the inlet, and that wind can drive snow sideways into drifts that bury a driveway on one side while leaving the other nearly bare. Clearing streets and lots near the domed roof of the old Russian Orthodox church, one of the oldest buildings on this whole stretch of coast, means working carefully around narrow lanes laid out long before plow trucks existed. Ice builds fast on the bluff-top roads here, where a thin crust can form even when the temperature seems too mild for it, so timing the plow right matters as much as running it hard. Watching the mouth of the river go from open water to shorefast ice while a clean line of pavement reappears behind the truck is as much a marker of the season as anything else in Kenai.
