About North Trail Mulching

North Trail Mulching spends its warm months clearing brush and grinding down the standing spruce that beetle kill left behind across the Kalifornsky flats, and that same familiarity with the land under the trees carries into winter plowing. A lot of driveways out here cut through stands where dead spruce still lean at odd angles among the birch grown up around them, and knowing which trail was cleared last summer means knowing where a plow can actually turn around. Snow behaves differently in open, mulched ground than it does under a full canopy, drifting further and packing harder wherever the wind gets a clear run at it. Working these back trails and driveways means reading the land as much as the weather, since a route that was solid ground in October can hide a soft spot under November's first snow. Opening a trail back to a house tucked into the flats, clear from the road to the door, closes the loop on the same ground worked all year.
