In late June the Mendenhall Valley barely goes dark; light hangs over the ice until near midnight and every green thing takes advantage of it. The growing season here is short and fierce, so lawns get mowed, edged and stayed ahead of for as long as the sun allows. Ed's Edible Landscaping and Plant Nursery works the Valley's flat, muskeg-edged lots and the yards up toward the glacier, cutting back what crowds a lawn and clearing the yard when the season turns. Salmonberry leans in from every property line, and half the craft is deciding exactly where the wild stops and the grass begins. Come August, a mown lawn against that backdrop looks like something somebody meant.
