About J A Spain & Sons Inc

Houston sits along the Parks Highway where the Mat-Su valley starts to feel like real country again, birch and black spruce crowding right up to the shoulder and the Little Susitna River cutting through the trees nearby. J A Spain & Sons works the driveways and lots tucked back into that forest, long gravel runs that disappear into birch stands where a plow has to find the edges by memory once a few inches has covered the markers. Valley snow here can come dry and squeaky cold one week and heavy and wet the next, and the difference changes how a blade has to be set and how fast a driveway has to be cleared before it refreezes into ruts. Early mornings out this way are quiet enough to hear the plow itself over anything else, headlights picking out birch trunks white with frost on either side of the cut. Getting a family out to the highway on time, day after day, all winter, is the plain job underneath all of it.
