The rain that makes Chichagof Island so green also makes grass come in thick and fast, and a lawn here needs regular mowing to stay a lawn at all. Done right, the result is lovely: an even sweep of green set against gray stone, dark spruce and the water beyond. It is yard work with its sleeves rolled up, rooted in a Tlingit village that has long known how to live with the rain.
