Up on the hillside above Homer, the slopes that face the water take the light first and hold it longest — the south-facing ground that gives Southern Exposure LLC its name and grows grass twice as fast for the privilege. In June the sun barely sets, Redoubt and Iliamna stand pale across Cook Inlet, and mowing can run late into an evening that never really goes dark. The work is mowing those long benched yards, trimming the banks too steep for a wheel, and clearing brush and clippings so a view stays a view. Nothing on this hill is flat, which makes a clean, even cut something you can see from half a mile down the road. That is the point: a bright, well-kept yard with the whole bay laid out beyond it.
