When the halibut boats come out of the water for the season, the Spit empties down to gulls, wind, and a scatter of trucks, and Homer eases into the kind of winter quiet that still needs clearing before dawn. Frigid North Services works that hush, plowing the lots along the Spit road and the driveways rising toward the bluff, where a wind funneling straight off Kachemak Bay can pack a foot of snow into a drift overnight. The cold out here carries a damp edge off the water, different from the dry interior kind, and it glazes everything if the plow doesn't get there first. There's real satisfaction in cutting a clean path down to gravel while the boat trailers are still the only shapes moving in the dark, the bay unseen but loud with wind. By the time the first trucks head down toward the docks, the lot is open and the morning already has a shape to it.
