About East Road Services, Inc.

Out along East End Road, driveways climb and fall with the bluffs above Kachemak Bay, and a plow has to know every one of them by feel before the light comes up. East Road Services works that stretch mile by mile, clearing the long gravel approaches where spruce leans close and the bay glints gray-green far below. Some mornings the snow arrives soft off the water; other mornings it's driven sideways by wind funneling down from the Grewingk Glacier side, and either way the driveway has to be open before anyone leaves for town. There's a particular satisfaction in leaving a clean line at the top of a hill people were afraid to trust that morning, snow banked neat to one side, gravel showing through where the blade found it. By the time the ferry sounds its first horn down at the harbor, another stretch of East End Road is passable again.
