Gomi's Garden

About Gomi's Garden

When bald eagles begin gathering on the Chilkat River flats in late fall, Haines enters its golden, windblown last chapter before winter. Cottonwood leaves come down in heaps across the yards, the grass slows, and Gomi's Garden turns to the work of putting lawns to bed. Leaves are raked and hauled off, the last cut is taken short and clean, and beds and borders are tidied before the first hard frost locks everything in place. It is unhurried, patient work, the kind that lets a yard sleep well and wake easily in spring. Out on the river the eagles keep their watch, and in town the lawns lie neat and ready for snow.
