By March the sun comes back to Goodnews Bay in long gold slants, and the Ahklun Mountains behind the village stand white against a sky that finally stays light past supper. Storms still come off the water, though, and KJ SNOW REMOVAL goes out after them to dig the village back into daylight. Drives get pushed open, steps and landings get cleared, and the banks are set back far enough that the next blow has somewhere to go. Down at the mouth of the Goodnews River the ice is still holding, but up among the houses the ground is open again, swept and squared off by hand and machine. It is the work of a late-winter place that knows spring is near and not here yet.
