Glennallen anchors the wide Copper River Basin, and when a winter morning breaks clear the Wrangell Mountains fill the eastern sky: Drum, Sanford and Wrangell itself, sometimes trailing a thin plume of steam. The basin traps cold air, and temperatures can sink far below zero and stay there for weeks. Nelchina services holds the line against that hard winter in this crossroads town on the Glenn Highway, clearing driveways and footpaths. Out in the surrounding country the Nelchina caribou herd roams, while in town the work is plainer but just as essential: snow pushed back, surfaces scraped, a clear route out to the highway. Once sunlight finally reaches the Wrangells' snowfields, a clean path is waiting below them.
