On a clear night with the aurora running green and gold overhead, the snowbanks along a Fairbanks street pick up just enough of that color to look faintly lit from within, about the only extra light a plow crew gets before the sun comes back for the winter. Yellow Snow Plowing runs its routes through those long dark hours, clearing driveways along the ridge roads while most of the neighborhood is still asleep and the sky is doing the only interesting work in sight. The crew has learned to watch that sky as much as the road, since a bright display usually means clear, hard cold rather than the wetter snow that's actually harder to move. Sand goes down after the blade on any stretch that sits in shade all day, keeping ice from building back in before the sun even gets a chance at it. It's quiet work, done mostly by starlight and whatever color the sky happens to be putting on that night.
