By the end of August the sun begins setting properly again behind Murphy Dome, and the evenings return to Fairbanks in long orange slants. Midnight Sun Mowing is out in those hours, running the last cuts of the year across yards that spent the whole summer growing without a pause. Mowing up here is a sprint — a few months of heat and light, gravel dust on everything, grass thick enough to windrow. Getting a lawn even and trimmed at the close of the season is a way of setting a place down gently before the cold. The routes cover town and the ridges around it, right up until the ground says stop.
