Some winters, Fairbanks gets a stretch cold enough that the whole town seems to hang inside its own breath — ice fog thick enough to blur streetlights into soft halos and hide a truck at the end of its own driveway. Ice Station 907 works through exactly those stretches, when most other jobs in town have simply stopped and the roads belong to whoever's willing to run a plow at fifty below. Diesel engines need babying in that cold, so routes get planned tight, looping back to keep the truck warm rather than parking it for long. Driveways get cleared in careful passes, since packed snow at that temperature turns into something closer to concrete than powder. When the cold finally breaks and the fog lifts off the river, the driveways this crew worked are already bare, waiting on the thaw like everyone else's aren't.
