In September the sandhill cranes drop onto Creamer's Field and the whole neighborhood hears them going over College Road, calling all afternoon. G's Groundskeeping and Maintenance is finishing the mowing season about then, taking lawns down one last time before the ground hardens for good. Groundskeeping is the unshowy half of a property looking right — the trim line held at the fence, the grass kept even across a whole summer, the small repairs of attention. A Fairbanks summer runs hot and dry and fast, and a lawn left alone for a month says so plainly. The work moves through town and the roads leading out of it, week to week, until the birds have all gone south.
