Out on the Tanana Flats south of Fairbanks, Eielson's runways and housing loops sit low in birch and black spruce flatland that pools cold air until the thermometer gives up somewhere past forty below. Grizzly Earthworks works the base housing streets and the access roads back toward the flightline, clearing them before the ice fog thickens enough to swallow headlights whole. The flat ground here doesn't drift the way hill country does — it just settles, layer on layer, until a driveway clear at dawn needs doing again by dusk. Sidewalks between housing units get shoveled down to bare concrete so boots don't skid on the walk to the bus stop, and culverts get checked so meltwater has somewhere to go once the sun climbs back in March. It's steady, repetitive work in a place where the cold itself is the main obstacle.
