At Mile 1422, where the Alaska Highway finally runs out of road and hands off to the Richardson, the fields around Delta Junction lie flat and open enough to catch every gust off the Alaska Range before it ever reaches town. Grizzly Construction Services runs its plows out along those barley fields and homestead roads before the wind has a chance to redraw the drifts twice in one morning. Mount Hayes catches the first pink light while the trucks are still working the long straightaways past the bison range, blade down, pushing three-foot drifts back off the shoulder.
