Out at Chiniak, near the end of the road on Kodiak Island's eastern shore, winter arrives from the sea. The island Alaskans call the Emerald Isle stays green most of the year, but when a storm swings in off the Gulf of Alaska, snow lands thick and wet on the Sitka spruce and the houses along Chiniak Bay. Emerald Island Enterprise takes on that heavy maritime snow, opening driveways and paths before it can freeze into ruts or sag into slush. Coastal weather can flip from snow to rain and back again in an afternoon, so timing is half the job. When the job is done, the way runs open from door to road, and the gray water of the bay keeps rolling beyond the trees.
