Deep cold in Fairbanks has a way of sinking into the Tanana Flats and staying there for days, ice fog thick enough to taste, while Chena Ridge a few hundred feet up stays clear and sunlit through the same cold snap, and Dirty Boys Construction runs its plow routes on that higher ground where the work at least comes with decent visibility. Driveways along the ridge wind through stands of birch that hold onto their leaves late some falls before the first heavy snow finally strips them bare for good. The grades up here are enough to matter, gentle rises and dips that keep a plow truck working in low gear more than the flat ground down toward the river would. Properties tend to be spread out rather than packed tight, each one with its own stretch of ridge road frontage and its own angle on the fogged-in valley below. It's cold, clear-headed work above a valley that spends a good part of its winter unable to see itself.
