From certain driveways on Chena Ridge, the whole Tanana Flats spreads out below in winter like a separate, colder country, ice fog pooled into the low ground while the ridge stays clear enough for stars most nights. Chena Exterior Services plows those driveways in that clearer air, working birch-lined lots along the ridge road on a schedule that doesn't much care what the fog is doing down in the valley. University housing and staff neighborhoods sit close enough that some of the routes finish just as the earliest classes are getting underway across the river. Snow up here tends to squeak underfoot in deep cold the same as anywhere in the Interior, but the wind behaves differently on a ridge than it does on the flats, drifting along fence lines instead of piling flat and even. It's a short list of driveways, each one with its own angle on a view most of Fairbanks only gets from underneath the fog itself.
