By January, the cold along Badger Road digs in hard enough that a truck left outside overnight needs a block heater just to turn over, and Jusczak Operations plans its plowing around exactly that kind of morning, engines running well before the blade ever drops. Ice fog can hang low over the flats here for a week at a time in a deep cold snap, and running a route through it means working mostly by memory of where the ditch line sits rather than by sight. Properties along this stretch tend to be spread wide, homesteads and larger parcels rather than subdivisions, so a single morning's work might cover a dozen driveways instead of fifty. The birch and spruce close in tight along a lot of these access roads, narrow enough that a plow has to thread rather than push straight through. It's a short list of stops covering a lot of ground, built for a road that empties out fast once you're past North Pole.
