Across Cook Inlet from Anchorage, Mount Susitna lies low and long against the horizon — the Sleeping Lady, everyone here calls her — and on a clear winter afternoon she's visible from driveways all over the west side of town, snow catching the last light on her ridgeline long after the streets below have gone blue with dusk. Susitna Services clears those west-side streets with that view running the whole time: a driveway on a bluff above Knik Arm gets scraped clean while the mountain across the water still holds full sun. The tide flats out past the bluff freeze and break and freeze again all winter, and the wind that comes with the tide change tends to load one side of a driveway more than the other, which is the kind of local detail that changes where a truck starts a pass. Walks get cleared to the same standard as driveways — bare concrete, not just a packed-down path — because ice on a set of front steps doesn't wait for anyone's schedule. The work ends the same way most days: last light gone off the Sleeping Lady, streets behind the truck clear and dark.
