Every March, 4th Avenue downtown gets buried on purpose — truckloads of snow hauled in for the Iditarod's ceremonial start, mushers and dog teams staged where delivery trucks usually idle. The rest of the year, Plowz & Mowz works the opposite job on those same downtown blocks: getting the snow off 4th and the side streets around it so the businesses that watch the race go by in March can open their doors the other eleven months. Storefront entrances get cleared early, before foot traffic starts, sidewalks scraped down to the historic brick and concrete underneath rather than left with a packed-down crust. A loading zone blocked by an overnight plow berm from the city gets reopened by hand where a truck can't fit. Dense, small-scale work compared to a subdivision — one storefront, then the next, all the way down the block — done in the shadow of a street that spends one week every winter as a starting line instead of a sidewalk.
