North of Eagle River, past where the subdivisions thin out, Chugiak still has the big lots and long driveways that come with being the outer edge of the municipality, close enough to Eklutna Lake that the water shows turquoise through the ice on a clear day. Snow King Services runs its mornings quiet out here, working driveways that stretch two or three hundred feet back from the road on properties with room for a horse or a wood pile as well as a house. There's less traffic to work around than in town, but more ground to cover per stop, so the routes are built around distance rather than density. Spruce and birch crowd close to a lot of these driveways, and the plowing threads between them rather than clearing wide open ground. By midmorning the road out to Eklutna is usually the only sign of traffic left, the rest of the valley settled back into its usual winter quiet.
